For all custom related stuff..
Belt Drives:
I'd like to find out how popular belt drives are vs chain primary drives in custom builds.
There are pluses and minuses for each.
If you've ever seen some guys with wide belt drives try to make a tight left, you would see one of the trade offs.
Same with foot clearance.
Dry clutches do have to be air blown out sometimes to stop the squeals and squeaks.
Cost is pricey.
Chain drives - chain stretch / adjustment, leaking potential, oil change
Cost is much less expensive.
i like the belts a little better, little smoother, but when you break one your done.chains a little easyer to come by on the road.i do like the open primary better.the primary drive i have is only 1 1/2 wide..i don't however like the 4" wide drives. just looks wrong..
jesssss, i don't know what to think about that, hey NWM.how is the bike project coming ??bet you can't wait to test her out...i'm still trying to find out why my belt is breaking.all work and no ride..
Motor arrived today, tranny on Friday.
Ordered the final chain drive set up today, (gettin rid of the belt drive)
Starter might be an issue.
Might have to go to the compufire unit (600 bucks) to dish out the torque needed to turn her over cold, even with compression releases.
Can't wait to throw a leg over her and light her off.
Gonna break it real nice by riding to the Reno rally later on.
Only two or three reasons for belts breaking:
1. belt too tight
2. damage to one of the pulley teeth.
3. too many burn outs.....
i don't do burn-outs, bought 2-new pullys [the old ones looked fine??]i'll check the tension when i put it back together. the long roller bearings were dry as hell. made a lot of noise.no way to grease them with taking the clutch housing off ---right??i know grease holds them on long enough to get the housing back on, but after that you have to pull it back off?? thanx..
those are all great looking bikes..i'm just to old scool for most of those.capitan american bike is still one of my favs...
